July is Social Wellness Month: Stronger Together
By Coach Kate
When most people think about wellness, they often focus on exercise and nutrition. But there’s another important piece of the puzzle that deserves just as much attention, social wellness.
July is Social Wellness Month, making it the perfect time to celebrate and connections that keep us motivated, accountable, and enjoying our fitness journey!
Why it matters
Working out with others can increase motivation, improve accountability, and make exercise more enjoyable. Whether you’re just getting started or have been training for years, having a strong support system can help you stay consistent and reach your goals.
Ways to Improve Your Social Wellness
- Find a workout partner to help keep each other motivated.
Having a workout partner is one of the easiest ways to stay consistent with your routine. Having someone expecting you to show up can provide the extra motivation you need on days when your energy is low. Workout partners can also celebrate milestones together, spot each other during lifts, and help keep workouts safe and fun.
- Join a group fitness or small group training class to meet new people while getting a great workout.
Group workouts are a great way to meet people with similar goals while enjoying the energy that comes from exercising together. Working alongside others can push you to work a little harder than you might on your own. Plus, seeing familiar faces each week often leads to new friendships and a stronger sense of community within the gym.
- Start a walking group with friends, family, or coworkers to stay active together this summer.
Fitness doesn’t always have to happen inside of the gym. Organize a weekly walk with friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to stay active while enjoying the summer weather. Walking groups are an easy way to fit movement into your schedule, catch up with people you care about, and introduce exercise to those who may be intimidated by a traditional gym setting.
- Encourage others with a smile or a few kind words
Sometimes the smallest interactions can make a big impact. A smile, a quick “great job,” or complimenting someone on their hard work or progress can help create a welcoming environment for everyone. Positive encouragement helps build confidence and reminds others they’re part of a supportive fitness community.
Keep it Respectful
While the gym is a great place to build connections, it is also important to be mindful of others. Keep conversations brief during workouts, avoid interrupting someone who’s focused or wearing headphones, and save longer chats for before or after your session. A friendly gym is a great gym, as long as everyone has their space to get their workout in.
July Challenge
This month, invite a friend to the gym, try a new workout class, or introduce yourself to someone new. Building connections can make your fitness journey more enjoyable, and you might even inspire someone else to get moving!
Let’s make this July a month of stronger bodies, stronger friendships, and a stronger fitness community!
